Where we operate

About Us

Ocean Youth Trust North is the sole provider in the North of England of a unique service which young people can access locally. Alternative provision is mainly on the south coast which makes it unaffordable, due to the cost of travel, as our clients in the main are deprived and disadvantaged.

Half the young people who sail with us come from areas in England that are within the bottom one third of the Indices of Multiple Deprivation.  20% of our young clients come from districts within the lowest 5% IMD

Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)

  • A measure of relative deprivation for geographic areas in the UK
  • IMD breaks England down into 32,844 local authority districts
  • Considers 7 different aspects of an individual’s living conditions
  • Gives a comparative measure of inequality, where areas with a low IMD have higher than average levels of poverty and social exclusion

The northeast authorities shown here rank within the 30 most deprived. They have the highest proportion of neighbourhoods considered to be in the most deprived 10% of neighbourhoods nationally.
