We’ve got some great news to share. Thanks to the generosity of The Rank Foundation, we can now expand our programme of voyages for young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training to enable them to participate in residential voyages on the Adventure under Sail programme.
Some 15% of 16 - 24 year olds in the Midlands and the South of England are in this unfortunate position, but this increases to almost 20% in the North of England. We are determined to help these young people grow in self-confidence and find a pathway to a constructive and fulfilling life.
Supporting young people to find and sustain a decent lifestyle and a fulfilling job is one of our key objectives. We help young people on their journey to employment by developing the capabilities, knowledge and skills they need as a basis for finding work.
There are demonstrable links between the intermediate results from our character building voyage and successful employment outcomes. Studies have shown that employability skills like teamwork and communication are highly valued by employers, often far more than educational qualifications. Enhanced resilience is also linked to the development of a successful education and career.
Over the past quarter century OYT North has worked with over 10,000 young people and we currently welcome over 500 more each year onto our voyages and training courses. Thanks to the Rank Foundation, we can now help even more.
