It is well recognised that this transition is a disruptive period in a young person’s life, occurring at a time when they are experiencing physiological and psychological change.
The OYT North Key Stage 2 Expedition provides a safe but challenging overnight adventure for Year 6 pupils aimed at supporting them at this difficult time, enhancing self-confidence, resilience and well-being.
The voyage takes place on-board the yacht James Cook which can accommodate up to 12 young people accompanied by two teachers / leaders.
Our professional Skipper and sea staff will engage pupils in a range of ship-based activities such as preparing the vessel for departure, steering and navigating as well as preparing and cooking meals. These are all activities which encourage participants to work as a group, overcome new challenges, negotiate and compromise, meet new people, and to be flexible in adapting to new routines and a new environment.
Most importantly, we encourage them to achieve while having a good time.
We will depart from the Royal Quays Marina, North Shields and sail up the River Tyne to spend the night moored at Newcastle’s Town Quay near the Millennium Bridge, before returning to Royal Quays the next day.
Safety and familiarisation briefings are given before departure and all activities are fully risk assessed.
Activities that reinforce the aims of the voyage will be organised while the boat is alongside the quay and we can tailor your expedition to complement existing in-school transitional activities to ensure that your ‘crew’ will benefit most from this fantastic experience.
You could get them involved before the expedition by getting them to choose their evening meal.
The cost includes the use of wet-weather clothing, life jackets as well as all on-board activities, meals and refreshments.
Travel to and from the James Cook is not included.
