Ocean Youth Trust North seeks a Skipper for the 20m ketch, James Cook.
Based at North Shields, James Cook operates in the North Sea and occasionally further afield in the Irish Sea and the Baltic.
The key responsibilities of the post will be to deliver Sail Training/ Youth Development voyages safely and to a consistent standard, and to manage and develop staff and volunteers while they are onboard.
Ocean Youth Trust North has operated for 23 years, providing young people from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity for personal development through ‘Adventure under Sail’. We are seeking someone who easily identifies with young people and can interact with them positively to inspire, encourage, and motivate.
Requirements
Yachtmaster Offshore with Commercial Endorsement
RYA Level 2 Powerboat
ENG1 medical certificate
Must have the right to live and work in the UK.
Minimum of 5 years of sailing experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership role such as a Mate or similar position on a sailing vessel.
Desired qualifications/ attributes
Empathy with young people
Able to work as part of a team with good administrative and reporting skills.
Previous experience of Sail Training
Experience of refit and vessel maintenance
RYA Cruising instructor (or working towards)
MCA Approved Engine Course
GMDSS Long Range
Proficiency for Persons in Charge of Medical Care on Board Ship
Salary/ Terms and Conditions
Competitive remuneration, to be agreed according to experience.
We initially offer a fixed term contract from March to November 2024, renewable by mutual agreement at the end of the season.
Opportunity for winter refit.
Offers of employment will be made subject to completion of an enhanced DBS check and on-board skipper assessment.
